I’ve been working hard at product photography here in Vermont and on location around the country over the past few months and wanted to share some of the photos. The work has ranged from medical products to high end home goods, exquisite violins, and celebrity lines of plates and glasses for the Lionel Richie Home Collection. Some of the photos were styled, some were shot on a white background. It’s always fun to get deep into a product line and work my way through it. Product photography is always a challenge. Some of the hardest photos to create are the ones that seem to be the simplest. A great “cut-out” or silhouette photo of a product is much more complicated that it looks, especially if you’re shooting white, reflective or see through products (like I always seem to be doing).

I had the great honor and opportunity to shoot some of the new Lionel Richie Home Collection. In this photo we were trying to keep everything simple, but add a little dimension and a pop of color. The pomegranate really comes alive with the low angle of the light.
This is a slice of another large setup for the Lionel Richie Home Collection. Taking our cues from old masters paintings we created a huge, sumptuous table spread that we shot from above. A lot of work went in to this setup, making sure everything was in the right place and the colors and textures fit with the plates and glasses.
Follow the circles.
A lot of product photography is about trying to find interesting ways to show of your subject.
Simple styling goes a long way to accentuate products. While it might look simple, photographing products never is.
One of Edlund’s industrial slicers. These things are are an amazing example of pure function. Steel slicers to last years in high volume environments. This product was photographed in the studio here in Burlington, Vermont.
Photographing clear glass on a white background can be a bit tricky, and almost always involves some post production to clean up the image.
Reflections in product photography are what makes every shoot a challenge.
Here’s a moody photo of Shelburne Vineyard’s Marquette Reserve wine bottle. I thought the deep purple background went well with the full bodied red.
Keeping it simple.
Masterfully crafted violins bridge the gap between form and function. There are some pieces that are truly works of art, and many that have survived hundreds of years and still sound amazing.
