With limited time to explore, our trip through Java was a whirlwind of planes, trains, automobiles, and quickly learning that I don’t need to eat three meals a day of nasi goreng (friend rice). Java, Indonesia’s most populated island (150 million out of a total of 250 million) is a chain of gigantic cities, separated by volcanoes and stunning terraced rice paddies. Long train rides between cities offered amazing views of the lush scenery.
